My kids and I listened to the audio version of this book as part of a summer kids' club。 (They talked about the book and watched the movie which was pretty awful。) But the book itself was quite good and we all enjoyed it and it made for some pleasant car rides and relaxing times before bed as we listened to the story unfold。 My kids and I listened to the audio version of this book as part of a summer kids' club。 (They talked about the book and watched the movie which was pretty awful。) But the book itself was quite good and we all enjoyed it and it made for some pleasant car rides and relaxing times before bed as we listened to the story unfold。 。。。more
Andrea Croskey,
I grew up with this movie, so I thought it would be a fun book to read Allie。 It was a little slow for her, but we stuck with it。
Chris,
I first read this book in 6th grade for school and have never forgotten it。 Mrs。 Frisby has to be one of the best female characters in literature; her dedication and bravery in her role as a mother to protect her children is truly inspiring。 I also love that this is a children's book that has an adult as a main character, which I think is very interesting。 It shows kids that adults aren't just boring or stupid, rather that they have complex emotions as well and are capable of adventure。 I first read this book in 6th grade for school and have never forgotten it。 Mrs。 Frisby has to be one of the best female characters in literature; her dedication and bravery in her role as a mother to protect her children is truly inspiring。 I also love that this is a children's book that has an adult as a main character, which I think is very interesting。 It shows kids that adults aren't just boring or stupid, rather that they have complex emotions as well and are capable of adventure。 。。。more
Lili,
When my work book club decided that the June 2021 book should be “any book you loved as a child,” I was very conflicted。 I was a book geek as a child because it gave me an excuse to be alone in my room rather than play with the other kids。 So there were countless books that I loved as a child。 But I managed to narrow my choices down to “From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler” and “The Secret of NIMH。” Of course, the latter book doesn’t exist; so I read “The Mixed Up Files” first (jus When my work book club decided that the June 2021 book should be “any book you loved as a child,” I was very conflicted。 I was a book geek as a child because it gave me an excuse to be alone in my room rather than play with the other kids。 So there were countless books that I loved as a child。 But I managed to narrow my choices down to “From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler” and “The Secret of NIMH。” Of course, the latter book doesn’t exist; so I read “The Mixed Up Files” first (just to have something to talk about at book club) while I tried to find the real title of this book。I read this book in one day of airline travel, and I found it as endearing as an adult as I did as a child。 I thought the book held up well over the past 50 years because it dealt mostly with the animal world。 There are still cats that kill mice, and little boys who trap mice。 There are still hardware stores that stock sundry things and scientists who study brain chemistry。 Of course, the true test of whether this book holds up across the generations will be whether my eight year old and seven year old nieces enjoy it。 Since I am their Book Aunt, the 50th anniversary edition will be a gift for them the next time that I visit。 。。。more

Matthew Metzdorf,
I reject the insinuation made early in this book that mice are smarter than crows
Kelley,
Through my kids I’m now able to read books I remember my friends reading as a kid but that I missed。 I’ve always seen this book and thought the title was amazing。 Now reading the book, I’m even more impressed。 This book was awesome。 I think I liked it more than my 9 year old did。 Maybe it’s just as well I read it later in life。 No spoilers or summaries, just appreciation。
Amy,
I read this book in the 6th grade, and it is so cute! I also love the creative story about the civilized group of rats and the mouse family- I can see why it won a new berry medal。 It reminds me of a cross between Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little。 It was a little slow in the beginning and lengthy text, but a really great read, all in all!
James Bullinger,
Even better than (though well adapted to) the terrifying 1982 Don Bluth animated masterpiece。
NAMOJOMI,
The book is entertaining。
lesley,
Started listening to the audiobook hoping to capture some of the magic I remembered from watching the movie as a kid -- while the book is more expansive in some ways, I actually prefer the distilled, animated version。 Some of the ideologies revealed through the text are also simply antiquated。 Can someone get the protagonist her own name?

I watched the movie when I was younger and when I saw that there was a book, I decided to read it。 Super cute book。 A LOT more science to it than the movie which is more like a fantasy。 The book made more sense and logically explained how things were done。 Instead of a magical amulet lifting Mrs。 Frisby's home from the muddy grown, the rats created a pully, placed the house on some rollers, and rolled the house to the new location。 Two drastically different tellings to the same story。 Enjoyed th I watched the movie when I was younger and when I saw that there was a book, I decided to read it。 Super cute book。 A LOT more science to it than the movie which is more like a fantasy。 The book made more sense and logically explained how things were done。 Instead of a magical amulet lifting Mrs。 Frisby's home from the muddy grown, the rats created a pully, placed the house on some rollers, and rolled the house to the new location。 Two drastically different tellings to the same story。 Enjoyed them both! 。。。more
Suzie。K,
It think it is a wonderful book。 It is about a mouse that has four children they live on a farm。 Every year they have to move out before the farmer plows their home up。 And every year the day is earlier and earlier so making it colder and colder。 One day Timothy gets sick with pneumonia。 Is he going to survive?

Siti Sumaiyyah,
What a dear little story this was! I was a little skeptical at first, of course, as the main characters of the book were mice and rats。 However, the book is so well-written and the characters so endearing that I ended up loving it after all。 I'd read the sequel, written by the author's son/daughter, if I'm right, called RT, Margaret and the Rats of NIMH and loved it。 I don't think many people think of it as fondly as Mrs。 Frisby and the Rats of NIMH but it did give me an idea of what to expect f What a dear little story this was! Will definitely read it again。 4。3 stars! 。。。more

this movie traumatized me as a child so I thought I would be brave and read the book as a 35 year old。turns out the book is not remotely scary and the movie is basically an entirely different plot。 the book did not traumatize me。 I hope it wasn't Justin who died saving the other buddies from the cyanide。。。but it probably was。 :( this movie traumatized me as a child so I thought I would be brave and read the book as a 35 year old。turns out the book is not remotely scary and the movie is basically an entirely different plot。 the book did not traumatize me。 I hope it wasn't Justin who died saving the other buddies from the cyanide。。。but it probably was。 :( 。。。more
